Question
System OdditiesSeptember 5, 2026Why does iPhone charging stop around 80%?
It stops at 80% on purpose. Optimized Battery Charging pauses there when it expects a long plug-in, then finishes just before you unplug. iPhone 15 and later can also set a Charge Limit. Clean Energy Charging, on by default in the US, waits for a cleaner grid — that is not an 80% ceiling.

Pause at 80, finish before you unplug
The charger is not broken. Optimized Battery Charging is on by default. Apple’s design is to reduce wear by reducing the time the iPhone spends fully charged. It is available only when Charge Limit is set to 100%. When it is on, the phone delays charging past 80% in certain situations. On-device machine learning learns the daily routine, and the feature activates only when the phone predicts a long stretch on a charger. The algorithm still aims to be full when you unplug. While it is active, the Lock Screen shows when the phone will be full. Touch and hold that notification, tap Charge Now, and it fills immediately.
It does not pause every time. Apple says it needs at least 14 days to learn, and at least nine charges of five hours or more in a given location. It is meant for places you spend the most time, such as home and work. Variable habits, travel, or short charges, and it stays off — the phone charges straight to 100%. Location used for this is not sent to Apple.
On iPhone 14 and earlier: Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. On iPhone 15 and later: Settings → Battery → Charging. Turning off charging optimizations, Apple says, can increase wear and shorten lifespan.
A cap is not the same as waiting for cleaner power
iPhone 15 and later add Charge Limit: 80% to 100%, in 5% steps. Below 100%, Optimized Battery Charging is not available. The phone charges to within a few points of the chosen limit, then stops. If the level drops more than 5% while plugged in, charging resumes to that band. With a limit under 100%, it will occasionally charge to 100% to keep the state-of-charge estimate honest. iOS may also recommend a limit — Apple’s example is 95%.
Clean Energy Charging is a different brake. From iOS 16.1, it is on by default in the United States: a carbon-emissions forecast of the local grid, charging when cleaner energy is available. It learns habits alongside Optimized Battery Charging, and only where you regularly charge for long periods. Variable habits or a new place, and it does not engage. When it suspends charging, the Lock Screen shows the estimated full-charge time; Charge Now works the same way. It waits on the grid, not on the 80% line.
