Are Taiwan postal codes 3 or 6 digits? What is the difference between 3+2 and 3+3?

Question

Weirdo · Accepted Answer

They are 6 digits now, in the "3+3" system. The first 3 digits are the administrative district and the last 3 are the delivery section code. The old "3+2" system became 3+3 on March 3, 2020: the first 3 digits stayed the same and the tail grew from 2 digits to 3.

According to CNA, 中華郵政 (Chunghwa Post) introduced 3+3 postal codes from March 3, 2020. The first 3 digits (administrative district) stay the same, and the delivery-section code grew from 2 digits to 3. The 3+2 system had been in use since February 1, 1991 (ROC year 80).

Chunghwa Post says the last 3 digits stand for delivery sections, a special number for bulk-mail recipients, or the delivery section serial number of ordinary households. The new system added dedicated codes for large organizations, companies, schools and buildings.

Chunghwa Post asks senders to write the 3+3 code to speed up sorting. It also notes that 3+3 lookup results are only a reference for addressing mail and for postal sorting, not for other purposes. If you do not know your 6-digit code, look up your full address on the Chunghwa Post postal code page.
