Two gray ticks mean delivered to their device—not that they read it. “Read” is the blue double ticks on WhatsApp (or LINE’s “Read” label)—and if they hide receipts or only glance at a notification, you may never see that state.

WhatsApp: one gray tick = reached WhatsApp’s servers; two gray ticks = delivered to the recipient’s phone or a linked device; two blue ticks = they opened the chat (when read receipts are on). In groups, the second tick waits until everyone has the message; blue waits until everyone has read it.

LINE usually shows no icon for a successful send; “Read” appears after the other side is counted as having seen it (group chats show a count). LINE’s help notes that, depending on the device and notifications, “Read” is only an approximate guide—not proof they carefully read every word.

Turning off read receipts typically stops blue ticks in one-to-one chats (group receipts often still appear). Notification previews, blocks, and flaky networks can also leave a message stuck on “delivered.” Treating two gray ticks as “read” is the most common misread.
