Subtract 1911 from the Western year to get the ROC (民國) year, or add 1911 to an ROC year to get the Western year. 2026 is ROC year 115, and ROC year 1 is 1912.

The Office of the President's overview says that after Sun Yat-sen took office as provisional president, 1912 was set as the first year of the Republic, with January 1 as its founding day. So 1912 − 1911 = 1 (ROC year 1) and 2026 − 1911 = 115 (ROC year 115).

The New Taipei City Civil Affairs Department's conversion table lists 1911 as 民前1年 (1 year before the ROC), 1910 as 民前2年, and 1912 as 民國1年. There is no ROC year 0. The table also lets you look up single years.

Forms often ask for the ROC year (for example a birth year of 85). Western 1996 minus 1911 gives 85. The formula applies from ROC year 1 (1912) onward; for earlier years use the 民前 count, for example 1905 is 民前7年.
