Question
System OdditiesOctober 18, 2026What is "System Data" in iPhone Storage, and why is it so big?
Details
How Apple defines it
At the bottom of Settings > General > iPhone Storage you see iOS itself and a separate system-data bucket. Apple's support page describes it as non-removable mobile assets: Siri voices, fonts, dictionaries, non-removable logs and caches, the Spotlight index, and system data such as Keychain and the CloudKit database. The System category, by contrast, is the operating system and varies by device and model.
Why it swings up and down
Caches are files left behind when you stream or view content so it loads faster next time, so heavy-use days make them grow. Apple also notes that an app's cached and temporary data might not count toward that app's usage, which is why the space looks like it belongs to nobody. When storage runs low, the device removes cached and temporary files to free up space.
What you can do if it's huge
Apple says the device removes cached and temporary files itself, so you don't have to, and you can't delete them manually. What you can do is follow the recommendations on the iPhone Storage screen: delete old message attachments and watched downloads, or turn on Offload Unused Apps. If system data stays abnormally large for weeks, the common last resort is to back up, erase the iPhone and restore from the backup.
