Dots aren't part of the account name
Google's help page is blunt: if you own johnsmith@gmail.com, you own every dotted version of it, and mail sent to any of them lands in your one inbox. Anyone trying to sign up with a dotted variant gets told the username is already taken. Dots don't make two people share a mailbox, and nobody else sees your mail.
Exception: work and school accounts
If you use Gmail through a company, school or other organization (addresses like yourcompany.com or yourschool.edu), dots do change the address; your admin controls them. Other providers differ too: Which? reports that Outlook, Yahoo and iCloud all treat dots as meaningful, making Gmail the only big free mail service that ignores them.
Getting a stranger's mail isn't a duplicate account
Because dots don't change your address, misdirected mail usually means the sender mistyped, or someone signed up somewhere using your address as if it were theirs. Google suggests replying to harmless senders, reporting suspicious mail as spam or phishing without clicking links, and unsubscribing from newsletters you never joined. It also admits it can't stop people from using a dotted version of your address to sign up for things.
