AirDrop shows the device name, not the person’s legal name. Out of the box that name is often just “iPhone.” If they never renamed Settings › General › About › Name—or you aren’t in each other’s contacts—you get a wall of identical labels.

The AirDrop list primarily shows the recipient’s device name from About, plus whether a Contacts match exists. When both sides have each other saved and receiving is set to Contacts Only, you usually see the contact name. Otherwise the UI falls back to the device name—and many people never change the factory “iPhone” or “Someone’s iPhone.”

Control Center’s Contacts Only / Everyone for 10 Minutes setting controls who may send to you, not what string appears in the picker. Switching to Everyone only makes you discoverable; it does not rename a generic “iPhone.”

Rename the device under Settings › General › About › Name. Bluetooth’s “Now discoverable as…” line uses the same string. Renaming before a group share is far more reliable than guessing among identical iPhones.
